Message on screen “No Satellite signal is being received”

Probably the most common error message that sky Customers encounter with their box

is the dreaded 'No Satellite Signal is being received' error message.

In my experience there are 4 possible reasons for this
    1. The satellite dish has moved or is damaged

    • SOLUTION: Check to see is the dish correctly aligned. If the dish has moved it is very difficult
    •  to re-align without a professional satellite meter and you will probably need an engineer to fix it.
    •  Contact us

    2. The cable/connectors connecting the dish & box has become loose or damaged

    • SOLUTION: Check that the F-type (screw in) connector at the back of the satellite is correctly attached.
    •  Also check that the cable has not been damaged.

    3. The box has a hardware problem

    • SOLUTION: check if the box will turn on. If there is no light on the box then the fault is most likely serious
    •  and you may need a new box.

    4. The box has a Software problem

    • SOLUTION: This is the most common problem seen with sky boxes but is quick and easy to fix with performing
    •  a software download. Procedure here

Message on Screen “There is a Technical Fault with this Channel….”

This is quite a common problem and is caused by the software in your sky box not being the most up-to-date version.
It normally occurs when sky are updating the software in its boxes by remotely downloading new software at night time. Inevitably certain boxes will not have been correctly updated and this causes the problem.
But never fear the fix is very simple

      • SOLUTION

Plug out the power lead of the satellite box
Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds
      Plug the box back in
If this does not fix the problem, perform a “software Download

      This will fix your problem!

      Sky+ freezing/wont Record

This is one of the most common problems that arise with sky customers. Though TV viewers love Sky+ because of its extra features, it is because of these technical add ons that these problems arise.. You may encounter problems with your Sky+ such as the picture freezing or breaking up (pixilation).
One of the probable causes of this is the Storage space (hard Drive) is too full, initially try deleting some of the programmes you have recorded, we recommend that you leave at least 20% of your storage space free and this allows for the natural spacing that occurs within a hard drive.
Also perform a “SKY+ rebuild” the instructions how to do this are here
And then also perform a “software download” instructions how to do this are here.

      SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD

Firstly familiarise yourself with your sky box. You need to identify where the “backup” button is located on your sky box. When you have found the “Backup” button you need to find where the power cable plugs in to the back of the sky box. Now you will need both your hands free to perform this, so the procedure is

      • Unplug the power cable from the back of the sky box
      • Press and hold the backup button on the sky box
      • Whilst continuing to hold the backup, reinsert the power lead into the sky box
      • Continue holding the backup button until all 4 lights on the front of the sky box light up
      • Release the backup button
      • You should have a black screen with a written message advising “ performing software download and not to disrupt or disconnect the box from either the power supply or the satellite feed”
      • This could take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
      • When it is complete the screen will go completely blank and only the red standby button will be on.
      • Wait a further 2 minutes then press the “SKY” button on your remote control

        SKY+ REBUILD

To Perform a sky+ rebuild you must first access the “engineer Menu” of your Sky+ box
To access this you must first

        • Press the services button on your sky remote
        • Then goto number 4. On screen “system setup”
        • Then press “0” then “1” then “select” on your sky remote, you should then have accessed the Installer setup

        • Then it will give you a “for your information message” press “select” on the sky remote
        • It will then complete the procedure

Your Other Channels are missing /can’t see UTV or others

Due to copyright and contractual reasons certain channels that are available for free on satellite are not listed on the main sky listings (EPG). Probably the best known example of this would be UTV, ITV 2,3,4 & BBC 3,4.
However it is possible to add additional channels to the 'Other Channels' section of the sky box.
This is a fairly common problem that can be easily rectified by the customer by following the procedure below.

          Steps to tune in channels
          1. Press the “Services” button on the sky remote
          2. Select 'System setup'
          3. Select ‘Add channels'
Screen shot of the add Channels menu

          - Polarisation: v
          - Symbol: 22000
          - FEC: 5/6
          5. To save select the yellow button
          6. Follow the menu on screen and add more channels as required
          7. Press 'backup' repeatedly to exit
          To View channel
          1. Press the 'Services' button on the sky remote
          2. Select 'Other channels'
          3. Scroll down the list and select the required channel

How can I operate my TV with my Sky remote?

If you are having difficulty using your remote with your TV (say you are unable to adjust the volume, for example) then this is what you need to do. The instructions are actually already at your fingertips. It would be impractical to run through them here, as it is actually possible to go through the whole process, step by step, on your TV screen.

Before we begin, you will need to know the make and model of your TV. Your set will usually have the brand name on the front and the exact model number will usually be on a stick on the rear of your TV. To tune your remote control for use with your TV, press the "interactive" button (it's a green button near the top of your handset). Once the screen updates, select "Customer Services" from the menu. Again, once the screen updates, select "Equipment Help" and then "Configuring Your Remote". Sky may change the wording of these options, but the concept is the same.

You will be asked to select your TV by brand and model number and you will be given a short code to input along with all relevant instructions. If your exact model of TV is not listed, it might be worth trying the codes associated with different models. Unfortunately if you have exhausted all options and you are still unable to tune in your Sky remote to operate your TVs functions, then it may simply not be possible to use a Sky remote with your particular model of TV.
Alternatively you can use the Generic Procedure outlined Below
The remote control can also operate the basic TV functions (Channel changing / volume control / Text etc) on around 90% of TV manufacturers.
The 4 digit code (Shown in your Sky handbook) is used to identify the make and manufacturer of your TV. The individual 3 digit codes are used for each manufacturer.

To program using the 3 digit code.
          1) Switch on the TV set
          2) Press the TV button on the Sky Remote
          3) Hold down the select and red buttons for 2-3 seconds until the LED blinks twice
          4) Enter the 3 digit code
          5) Press the select button to store
Press TV and any number to test, If this does not operate the TV set try below.

To program using the 4 digit code
          1) Switch on the TV set
          2) Press the TV button on the Sky Remote
          3) Hold down the select and red buttons for 2-3 seconds until the LED blinks twice
          4) Press the TV button on the Sky Remote again
          5) Enter the 4 digit code for your make of TV
          6) The LED should blink twice, if not recheck the 4 digit code used and go back to 1
          7) Press the standby button on the Sky Remote (The TV should go to standby)
          8) Press select to store this setting
If the TV does not go into standby press the TV button then the standby button, then TV then standby, keep repeating this until successful. This will scan the codes used for a particular make of TV.

          CHECKING FOR SATELLITE SIGNAL

The first stop with all satellite problems should always be checking to see if you are receiving good satellite signal, the following procedure is how to see if you are receiving good signal, the grey bars are an approximate of how good the signal is coming through from the dish
Check Sky TV signal quality by pressing "Services" on the Skybox handset, then press "4" for "System Setup" and "6" for "Signal Test". Typical readings off a Sky box in dry weather under clear skies on the East coast of Ireland are about 70 - 80% signal strength and 60 - 70% signal quality.

          Screen Shot of Signal Test
          image006
Even with a correctly installed Sky TV box and dish, the signal quality may drop to around 50% during heavy rain and lower still during severe thunderstorms. It is important that on a good day your signal is at least 60-70 % other than that perhaps you need to get your dish realigned.

Sky Remote has stopped working totally

Occasionally the sky remote will totally stop responding to the buttons being pressed or will stop controlling the box or perhaps intermittent control. The way to solve this problem is actually quite simple.

          • Remove the existing batteries from the remote
          • Leave the batteries out of the remote for at least 1 hour
          • This will reset the remote back to its default settings
          • Replace with completely new batteries
          • You will have to reprogramme your remote to control the volume of your T.V. Instructions how to do this are here
